Okanagan Senate

The Okanagan Senate is the academic governing body of the Okanagan campus of the University, and its responsibilities include admissions, course and program curriculum, granting of degrees, academic policy, examinations, and appeals of standing and student discipline. The Okanagan Senate meets every month from September to May of each year, and also has a variety of committee meetings that occur frequently.

Senate Highlights - March 28, 2012

 Following are highlights of the Okanagan Senate meeting held Wednesday, March 28, 2012: 

  • Approved the following admissions proposals: 1) Homeschooled Secondary School Applicants; 2) BFA Major in Visual Arts – Deadline for Portfolio, Letter of Intent: advance the deadline for submission of portfolio and letter of intent from the current March 15 to February 15
  •  Approved the English Foundation Program (EFP) and associated courses (English for Academic Purposes, EAP 103 (3), EAP 104 (3)): EFP is a unique initiative on the UBC Okanagan campus designed to offer an admission pathway to academically strong applicants who have not yet satisfied the University's English Language Admission Standard (ELAS)
  • Approved O-50: Broad-Based Admission, a new policy designed to 1) allow for the collection of information on student attributes and abilities that would not be available based upon secondary school or other academic records alone; and 2) allow faculties to use data beyond Admission Averages to consider applicants with a view to selecting students of the highest quality
  • Approved the UBC Annual Report on Admissions Targets, Okanagan Campus 2012/2013
  • Approved over $6,000 in new awards for domestic undergraduate students
  • Approved the designation of “Chancellor’s Scholar”, a non-monetary award on the basis of outstanding academic achievement by students entering undergraduate programs from secondary school, university, or college
  • Approved the International Major Entrance Scholarship (Okanagan): renewable scholarships totalling $28,000, payable at $7,000 per year over four years, available to outstanding international students entering undergraduate programs
  • Approved the B.Sc. Major in Statistics, Statistics Honours Program, Minor in Statistics, and associated courses: STAT 311, 400, 407, 410
  • Approved the Master of Social Work (MSW) Foundational Two-Year Program, and associated courses: SOCW 506, 507, 509, 510, 545, 555

Okanagan Academic Calendar Release

Senate and Curriculum Services is pleased to announce the first release of the 2012/13 Okanagan Academic Calendar (Version 1.0). 

This new version contains approved updates from Senate meetings up to and including the November 23, 2011 meeting. 

Please note: the second and final release of the 2012/13 Academic Calendar is scheduled for late May 2012.

Policy O-100: Review of Assigned Standing in a Course
