Terms of Reference
- Responsible for recommending the following to Senate:
- Significant matters of academic policy and general academic regulations, if such matters are not explicitly covered by the terms of reference of another committee of Senate; and
- Proposals for the organization or re-organization of academic units with teaching programs.
Committee Summary
This Committee considers policy matters that mediate the academic interactions among students, faculty, and staff at the University.
The Academic Policy Committee is responsible for many Senate policies and regulations. Some of the policies include: Academic Concession, Content and Distribution of Course Syllabi, and Academic Accommodations. The Committee also evaluates academic policies that academic units propose or wish to modify as well as changes to the academic structure (faculties, schools departments, etc.) of the Okanagan Campus.
In the past Triennium, the following are some of the policies that the Committee considered:
- COVID-19 regulations;
- Fee-based Digital Learning Tools Used for Assessments;
- Naming Policy (jointly with Board of Governors);
- academic freedom; and
- the academic year,
The Committee’s work generally has impact broadly across campus and therefore requires both high-level evaluation of purpose and objectives, and detailed analyses of direct and indirect effects, plus anticipation of potential unintended consequences. The Committee needs to weigh the consequences of academic policies on students, faculty, and staff, and any trade-offs among them. Consider joining this committee if you enjoy policy-making and the thoughtful consideration and debate that such matters require.
