Overview

The current policy on Reviews of Administrative Units was approved by the Vancouver Senate in September 1977.  With the exception of an amendment in 1983, the policy has not been revised since that time. It was extended to the Okanagan Campus in 2005 and an updated set of Principles, Procedures and Guidelines  was approved in 2013/2014.

In 2018, the UBC Vancouver Campus underwent its first Quality Assurance Process Audit (QAPA), as required by the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.  In the process of preparing the Institution Report for the QAPA site visit, it became clear that a review of the policy on Reviews of Administrative Units was needed, and that there was an opportunity for alignment with current standards and best practices for quality assurance and enhancement. This was reiterated through the QAPA review of the Okanagan campus in 2021.

Cyclical external reviews are in place to evaluate program quality and academic operations of units at UBC, highlighting the strengths and challenges of educational and research programs as well as the adequacy of resources. The process encourages a forward-looking evaluation, planning, and prioritization of short and long-term goals for the unit and its programs. The results of an external review may also inform an Advisory Committee in its task to advise on the selection of a new Dean or Head/Director, or on the reappointment of a Dean or Head/Director for a second and final term. This draft policy was designed to provide a clear structure and enhance transparency and accountability in external reviews of academic units and their academic programs.
